Multi-turret cutting strategies
| Strategy | Description |
|---|---|
| Independent | Each turret works on a different spindle or feature |
| Balanced / pinch turning | Two tools cut the same diameter from opposite sides |
| Leading / following | One turret roughs ahead while the other finishes |
Channels and wait codes
Each turret is controlled by its own channel (path). The post writes one program per channel and inserts matching wait codes where operations must start or finish together.
(PATH 1 - UPPER TURRET) (PATH 2 - LOWER TURRET)
T0101 T0202
G00 X80. Z2. G00 X82. Z-40.
M* (wait 10) M* (wait 10)
G01 Z-40. F0.3 G01 Z-80. F0.3
M* (wait 11) M* (wait 11)
Wait M-code numbers and formats depend on the controller and builder (for example numbered M-codes on FANUC multi-path systems).
Interference and safety
- Define safe zones where turrets can never meet.
- Use controller interference checking where available.
- Simulate both channels together before running.
Cycle time balancing
The fastest program keeps both turrets busy. Good CAM synchronisation plus a post that outputs clean, minimal wait points gives the best cycle time.
With multiple turrets, the wait codes are as important as the cutting moves.
