What can be automated
- Parametric enclosures, cabinets, covers, brackets, ducts and hoppers.
- Standard features: louvres, cable entries, hinges, fixing holes, stiffeners.
- Flat patterns using your bend allowance or K-factor tables.
- DXF files with your layer and naming conventions.
- Bend drawings with bend tables for the press brake.
- Material and thickness lists for nesting and purchasing.
Accurate flat patterns
Flat pattern accuracy depends on bend deduction data matched to your material, thickness, tooling and press brake. Automation should use your company's gauge and bend tables, not CAD defaults.
| Material | Thickness | Inner radius | K-factor |
|---|---|---|---|
| CRCA | 1.5 mm | 1.5 mm | 0.38 |
| SS304 | 2.0 mm | 2.0 mm | 0.42 |
| Aluminium 5052 | 3.0 mm | 3.0 mm | 0.40 |
Example values only. Real values must come from your own bend tests.
DXF output that machines love
- Correct 1:1 scale and units.
- Closed, clean contours without duplicate or overlapping lines.
- Bend lines and etch marks on separate, named layers.
- Part number, material, thickness and quantity in the file name or as text on an etch layer.
- Consistent orientation, for example grain direction along X.
File name pattern:
{PartNo}_R{Rev}_{Material}_{Thickness}mm_Q{Qty}.dxf
e.g. ENC-1042_RB_SS304_2.0mm_Q4.dxf
A complete automated workflow
- Engineer enters enclosure size and options.
- Automation generates the 3D sheet metal assembly.
- Design rules check bend radius, hole-to-bend distance and flange lengths.
- Flat patterns and DXFs are exported for every sheet metal part.
- BOM and material list are generated for nesting and purchasing.
When DXFs come straight from validated models, the laser cuts what engineering intended.
Platforms
SOLIDWORKS, Inventor, Creo, Fusion and Solid Edge all have strong sheet metal APIs. For 2D-based shops, AutoCAD automation can generate flat patterns directly using your bend deduction formulas.
Automate your sheet metal work
ENGIMANDI builds sheet metal automation for SolidWorks, Inventor, Fusion 360 and AutoCAD, plus CNC post processors.
