CNC Post Processors

How Post Processor Commissioning Works

Commissioning is the controlled process of proving a post processor on the real machine and approving it for production. Done properly, it is safe, quick and well documented.

Before the machine session

  • Post completed and all test programs simulated.
  • Machine warmed up, referenced and in good mechanical condition.
  • Tools measured and loaded; work offsets set.
  • Operator and programmer available; emergency stop procedure agreed.

Commissioning steps

StepPurpose
1. Header and tool change testConfirm safe start, tool change and offsets
2. Air cut above partVerify motion with Z offset raised
3. Single block critical movesRotary positioning, cycles, tilted planes
4. TCP / tilted plane checkTouch a known point with rotary axes tilted
5. Cycle checksDrilling, tapping, probing on scrap material
6. First-part cutMeasure features, surface and cycle time
7. Sign-offRecord version, results and approvals

Checking TCP on the machine

(Touch a probe or indicator tip at a known point)
(Rotate A/B with TCP active: the tool tip should stay on the point)
G43.4 H1
G0 A0. C0.
G1 A30. F500.
G1 A-30.
G49

If the tip moves away from the point while rotating, the kinematic data in the controller or post needs correction.

Handover

  • Approved post version stored under version control.
  • Post settings and options documented for programmers.
  • Known limitations listed clearly.
  • Support channel agreed for future changes.
Commissioning is where the post processor earns the machine operator's trust.
