CAD Integration

Connecting CAD with SAP, Oracle and Microsoft Dynamics

Enterprise ERP platforms each offer different integration interfaces. Here is how CAD integration works with the three most common ones.

Interfaces at a glance

ERPCommon integration interfaces
SAP S/4HANA and ECCOData services, BAPIs / RFC, IDocs, SAP Integration Suite (BTP)
Oracle Fusion Cloud / E-Business SuiteREST APIs, SOAP web services, FBDI file imports, Oracle Integration Cloud
Microsoft Dynamics 365 (F&O, Business Central)OData REST APIs, data entities, Dataverse, Power Automate

SAP

SAP stores items as material masters and BOMs as material BOMs, with engineering changes managed through change numbers. Integrations typically create or update materials, create BOMs with change numbers for effectivity, and attach document info records (DIRs) for drawings. S/4HANA offers standard OData APIs for many of these objects; older systems use BAPIs.

Oracle

Oracle Fusion Cloud uses Product Information Management (PIM) for items and structures, exposed through REST APIs. For large volumes, file-based data import (FBDI) is common. Oracle E-Business Suite uses PL/SQL APIs and open interface tables.

Microsoft Dynamics 365

Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations uses released products and BOM versions, accessible through OData data entities. Business Central offers a simpler REST API. Both authenticate through Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD).

// Dynamics 365 F&O: create a released product (conceptual)
POST https://{env}.operations.dynamics.com/data/ReleasedProductsV2
Authorization: Bearer {token}
{
  "ItemNumber": "100-2311",
  "ProductName": "Gusset plate",
  "ProductType": "Item",
  "ProductSubType": "Product"
}

Project considerations

  • Involve ERP teams early: custom fields, authorisations and test systems take time.
  • Change management: map CAD revisions to ERP change numbers or BOM versions.
  • Plants and organisations: items may need extending to several plants.
  • Security: use service accounts with minimal rights and secure credential storage.
  • Test systems: always develop against a sandbox or quality system.
The CAD side is usually the easy part. Agreeing ERP data rules takes the most time.
