The CAD-to-CNC chain
CAD model → CAM setup → Toolpaths → Post processor → G-code → Machine

prepare templates automation custom post setup sheets / DNC
Every arrow in this chain can be partly or fully automated.
1. CAM-ready model preparation
Automation can check that models are machinable (standard hole sizes, internal radii matching tools), add stock models, set work coordinate systems and tag features such as tapped holes and reamed bores for CAM.
2. CAM templates and feature-based machining
Most CAM systems support templates and feature recognition. Scripts can apply the right template by material and machine, and create toolpaths for recognised features automatically, using the Fusion API, Mastercam C-Hooks and NET-Hook, or SOLIDWORKS CAM and CAMWorks technology databases.
3. Custom post processors
A post processor converts toolpaths into G-code for a specific machine and controller. A custom post removes manual G-code editing and supports safe starts, tool changes, probing and 5-axis kinematics.
4. Setup sheets and shop documentation
Generate setup sheets with tool lists, stock sizes, work offsets, fixture images and estimated cycle time automatically from CAM data.
5. Shop-floor data flow
Send released NC programs and drawings to machines through DNC or MES, with revision control so operators always run the right version.
Examples by shop type
| Shop type | Automation example |
|---|---|
| Job shop milling | Feature-based toolpath templates plus custom post |
| Sheet metal | Automatic DXF export and nesting input |
| Wood / panel furniture | Parametric cabinets to CNC router programs |
| Mould and die | Electrode and plate machining templates |
| Production machining | Family-of-parts programs driven by parameters |
The goal is simple: no manual G-code edits, and no wrong program revision at the machine.
