What can be generated automatically
- Drawing sheets with the correct format and size based on part dimensions.
- Standard views: front, top, side, isometric, sections and details.
- Dimensions from model parameters, annotated features or rules.
- Hole tables, bend tables, weld symbols and notes.
- Balloons and parts lists for assemblies.
- Title block data from properties.
- Separate drawings for every part in an assembly, in one run.
Rules that make drawings look right
| Decision | Example rule |
|---|---|
| Sheet size | A3 if largest dimension < 800 mm, otherwise A2 |
| Scale | Largest standard scale that fits the views with margins |
| Views | Sheet metal: flat pattern + bend table; turned parts: one section view |
| Dimensions | Overall sizes always; hole positions from datum edges |
| Notes | General tolerance note by material and process |
Two main approaches
Template drawings linked to master models
For parametric product families, a drawing template is linked to the master model. When the model changes, views and dimensions update; automation copies and re-links both. This gives the most polished results.
Rule-based drawing creation
For varied parts, code creates sheets, places views and adds dimensions based on geometry analysis and rules. This covers more parts but usually needs a quick human review for layout.
The dimension challenge
Views and tables are easy to automate; good dimensioning is harder. Best practice is to define important dimensions in the model (annotations, PMI or named dimensions) and let the automation import and arrange them. Our tools then check for overlaps and clean up spacing.
Aim for drawings that need a two-minute review, not a two-hour rework.
Platform support
All major CAD APIs support drawing automation: SOLIDWORKS (DrawingDoc), Inventor (DrawingDocument), Creo TOOLKIT drawing functions, CATIA Drafting automation and NX Open drafting. In AutoCAD, 2D layouts and sheets can be generated with the .NET API.
Typical results
- Part drawing creation reduced from 30–60 minutes to a few minutes.
- Consistent layout and standards across the team.
- Complete drawing sets for large assemblies generated overnight.
