Who needs which format
| Format | Typical consumer | Automation considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Shop floor, quality, customers | All sheets, watermarks, revision in file name | |
| DXF | Laser, plasma, waterjet, punching | Flat patterns only, bend lines on separate layers, no annotations |
| DWG | Customers, consultants | Target DWG version, layer mapping |
| STEP | Suppliers, CAM, simulation | AP203 / AP214 / AP242, units, assembly structure |
| IGES, Parasolid, JT | Legacy systems, PLM viewers | Per customer requirement |
Features of a good export tool
- Naming rules: for example
PartNo_RevB_Description.pdf, built from properties. - Folder structure: by project, format or supplier.
- Assembly awareness: export all parts and sub-assemblies in one go.
- Filtering: DXF only for sheet metal of a given thickness; STEP only for bought parts.
- Stamps and watermarks: "Released", "For approval", date and user.
- Packaging: zip with a transmittal sheet for suppliers.
Three ways to trigger exports
- One-click button in the CAD ribbon for the active document or assembly.
- Batch run over folders or project lists.
- Automatic on release through PDM / PLM workflow events, so outputs always match the released revision.
Getting DXF right for cutting
DXFs for CNC cutting need special care: correct flat pattern orientation, bend lines on their own layer, no dimensions or text on the outline layer, correct units, and closed contours. Automation can also add engraving text, grain direction and part numbers on separate layers for the nesting software.
Layer plan example
OUTER - cutting outline
INNER - internal cut-outs
BEND_UP - bend lines (up)
BEND_DN - bend lines (down)
ETCH - part number marking
Benefits
- Minutes instead of hours per release.
- No outdated files sent to production or suppliers.
- Consistent names that ERP and MES systems can recognise.
Automated export guarantees that the file on the shop floor matches the released design.
