Fusion Tool Change Logic Customisation

The tool change is where many crashes and wasted seconds happen. We customise how your Fusion post handles every tool change: safe retracts, preselection, spindle and coolant sequencing, tool life and sister tools, broken tool checks and turret indexing.

Safe and fast, every time

A good tool change sequence stops coolant and spindle at the right moment, retracts safely (in Z first, then to the tool change position, and on multi-axis machines with rotaries unwound or cleared), calls the tool, reapplies length and diameter offsets, restarts the spindle and coolant, and approaches the part safely. Each machine does this slightly differently, and small mistakes cost either time or tools.

ENGIMANDI customises tool change logic in Fusion posts. We set retract strategy per machine, add next-tool preselection to save cycle time, output tool life and sister tool codes, insert broken tool detection after critical tools, handle turret indexing and live tools on lathes, and make every tool change block a safe restart point for operators.

Read tool change logic in post processors and safe retract strategies.

Use cases

Typical projects

  • Preselection to cut cycle time
  • Safe retract on a trunnion 5-axis
  • Broken tool check after small drills
  • Sister tools for lights-out runs
  • Lathe turret with live tools
  • Faster change on a drill-tap centre

FAQ

Tool change questions

Does preselection really save time?

On machines with a carousel or chain magazine, yes. The next tool is ready when the change happens.

Can we check for broken tools?

Yes, if your machine has a laser or probe system. We add checks after tools you choose.

What about restarting mid-program?

We output full modal state at each tool so operators can restart safely.

Do lathes need different logic?

Yes. Turrets index rather than change, and live tools need activation codes.

Is this a big change to the post?

Usually a focused change. We test it thoroughly because tool changes run on every program.
