CAD Integration

What Is CAD Integration? A Guide for Engineering and Manufacturing Companies

CAD holds the most important product data in your company. CAD integration makes sure that data flows automatically to everyone who needs it.

Definition

CAD integration means connecting your CAD software with other business and engineering systems, so that part data, BOMs, documents and status information move between them automatically, without re-typing or file shuffling.

Which systems connect to CAD?

SystemWhat is exchanged
ERP (SAP, Oracle, Dynamics, Odoo, Tally)Item masters, BOMs, costs, stock, routings
PDM / PLM (Vault, SOLIDWORKS PDM, Windchill, Teamcenter, ENOVIA)Files, versions, revisions, lifecycle status, changes
MESReleased drawings, work instructions, NC programs
CRMCustomer requirements, configurations, quotes
CAM / CNCGeometry, features, toolpaths, G-code
CAE (FEA, CFD)Geometry, loads, results, design changes
Excel and databasesParameters, catalogues, reports

Why it matters

  • No double entry: data is created once in CAD and reused everywhere.
  • Fewer errors: no typing mistakes between systems.
  • Speed: purchasing and production start sooner after release.
  • Visibility: everyone sees the current revision and status.
  • Traceability: changes are recorded end to end.

Integration patterns

File-based exchange

CAD exports CSV, XML or Excel files that the other system imports. Simple and low cost; good as a first step.

API-based integration

Software talks directly to each system's API (for example ERP web services), in real time or on events. More robust and automatic.

Middleware / integration platform

A central service maps and routes data between several systems, handling queues, retries and logs. Best for complex landscapes.

CAD ──► PDM/PLM ──► Integration service ──► ERP
                         │ └► MES
                         └► CRM / web portal

How to plan a CAD integration project

  1. Map current data flows and pain points.
  2. Decide the "system of record" for each data item.
  3. Standardise CAD properties and part numbering.
  4. Define mappings and triggers (for example "on release").
  5. Start with one high-value flow, such as BOM to ERP.
  6. Add monitoring, error handling and logs.
Integration is 20% technology and 80% agreeing on data ownership and standards.
