What PLM does beyond PDM
PDM manages CAD files and versions. PLM adds the wider product context: parts and BOMs independent of CAD files, change management (ECR / ECO), requirements, suppliers, compliance, manufacturing process plans and service information. Common PLM systems include PTC Windchill, Siemens Teamcenter, Dassault ENOVIA / 3DEXPERIENCE, Aras Innovator and Autodesk Fusion Manage.
What a CAD–PLM integration handles
| Function | Details |
|---|---|
| CAD data management | Check-in / check-out, versions, relationships between models and drawings |
| Part and BOM creation | Creating PLM parts from CAD and building the engineering BOM |
| Attribute synchronisation | Keeping CAD properties and PLM attributes in sync |
| Change management | Linking CAD revisions to change orders and approvals |
| Visualisation | Generating lightweight files (JT, PDF, 3D viewables) for non-CAD users |
| Downstream release | Passing released BOMs to ERP and MES |
Native connectors vs custom integration
PLM vendors provide standard CAD connectors (for example Windchill Workgroup Manager, Teamcenter Integration for NX / SOLIDWORKS / Inventor, or CATIA connectors for 3DEXPERIENCE). Custom integration is needed when you:
- Use a CAD system without a supported connector.
- Need company-specific attribute mapping or numbering.
- Want automatic checks before check-in.
- Need to migrate legacy data into PLM.
- Must connect PLM with ERP, MES or custom portals.
PLM APIs
Windchill offers REST services and Java APIs; Teamcenter provides SOA services and a REST API through Active Workspace; 3DEXPERIENCE exposes web services and EKL; Aras uses its IOM API and REST. Integrations combine these with CAD APIs.
Common challenges
- Mismatch between CAD structure and PLM part structure.
- Legacy data with inconsistent properties.
- Performance with very large assemblies.
- User adoption: check-in rules must not slow engineers down.
A PLM system is only as valuable as the quality of the CAD data flowing into it.
CAD–PLM integration with ENGIMANDI
We integrate Creo, CATIA, SolidWorks and Autodesk CAD with PLM systems, and handle data validation and migration. See also Teamcenter, Windchill, ENOVIA and Vault integration.
