Cloud CAD platforms and their APIs
| Platform | Integration capabilities |
|---|---|
| Autodesk Platform Services (APS) | Data Management, Model Derivative (translation), Viewer, Design Automation for AutoCAD, Inventor, Revit and 3ds Max, webhooks |
| Autodesk Fusion | Fusion API (Python / C++), cloud data and Fusion Manage |
| Onshape (PTC) | REST API, webhooks, FeatureScript, app store integrations |
| 3DEXPERIENCE (Dassault) | Web services for parts, BOMs and change, cloud CATIA and SOLIDWORKS |
Common use cases
- Web viewers: show 3D models and drawings in portals without CAD licences.
- Cloud automation: generate drawings and models on servers, triggered from web apps.
- Event-driven workflows: webhooks notify ERP or chat tools when a design is released.
- Supplier collaboration: controlled sharing with external partners.
- Mobile access: view and mark up designs on site.
Example: configurator using Design Automation
Customer selects options in web configurator
→ backend sends parameters to APS Design Automation
→ Inventor / AutoCAD engine runs in the cloud and generates files
→ Model Derivative prepares a web view
→ customer sees 3D preview; PDF and STEP stored for sales
Hybrid: desktop CAD with cloud services
Most companies still design in desktop CAD. A hybrid approach keeps authoring on the desktop while using cloud services for viewing, sharing, automation and integration with other cloud systems like CRM or ERP.
Security considerations
- Use OAuth with the minimum scopes needed.
- Check data residency requirements for customer or defence projects.
- Control external sharing links and expiry.
- Log access to sensitive designs.
Cloud APIs turn CAD data into a service that any authorised application can use.
