CAD Integration

CAD ↔ PLM/PDM Integration: A Complete Guide

From choosing between PDM and PLM to migrating legacy data, this guide covers everything you need to plan a successful CAD data management integration.

PDM vs PLM

Typical architecture

CAD (authoring)
   │ CAD connector / add-in
   ▼
PDM / PLM (files, parts, BOMs, changes, lifecycle)
│ integration service (API, events, queue)
   ├──► ERP (items, BOMs, routings)
   ├──► MES (released documents)
   └──► Portals, suppliers, service

Get the data model right

  • Numbering: intelligent vs sequential numbers, and where they are generated.
  • Properties: a standard list with owners, formats and mandatory flags.
  • Revisions: revision scheme (A, B, C or 01, 02) and when it increments.
  • Lifecycle states: Work in progress, In review, Released, Obsolete.
  • Relationships: part–drawing, part–document, alternates.

Where customisation is typically needed

  • Custom CAD property mapping and validation on check-in.
  • Automatic publishing of neutral formats and PDFs.
  • ERP and MES connectors.
  • Custom reports and dashboards.
  • Supplier or customer portals for controlled document sharing.

Legacy data migration

Most projects involve years of files on network drives. A migration tool can scan folders, find duplicates, read CAD properties, fix references, assign numbers and load files with history into PDM or PLM. Planning migration early avoids a slow and error-prone manual import.

Roll-out steps

  1. Define processes and data standards.
  2. Configure PDM/PLM and connectors.
  3. Build custom integrations and automation.
  4. Pilot with one team and real projects.
  5. Migrate data and train users.
  6. Go live and connect downstream systems.
Start with PDM if you mainly need file control; move to PLM when many departments need product data.
