Eight signs you are ready
- Engineers regularly complain about repetitive tasks.
- Similar products are redesigned for every order.
- Drawing reviews keep finding the same formatting errors.
- BOMs are re-typed from CAD into Excel or ERP.
- Engineering is the bottleneck for quotes or deliveries.
- Standards differ between engineers or sites.
- You are hiring just to keep up with routine work.
- Key knowledge sits with one or two senior people.
If three or more apply, customisation will very likely pay back.
A simple payback estimate
Annual saving = hours saved per week × 46 working weeks × hourly cost
Payback (months) = project cost ÷ (annual saving ÷ 12)
Example:
15 hours/week × 46 × ₹1,000/hour = ₹6,90,000 per year
Project cost ₹3,00,000 → payback ≈ 5.2 months
Add the value of fewer errors, faster quotes and extra capacity, which are often larger than the direct time saving.
What budget to expect
| Scope | Typical effort |
|---|---|
| Macro or small utility | A few days |
| Add-in with UI for one workflow | 2–6 weeks |
| Parametric tool with drawings and BOM | 1–3 months |
| Configurator with ERP integration | 3–6 months, in phases |
Phased delivery keeps risk low: start small, prove value, then expand.
When customisation is not the answer (yet)
- The process is still changing every few weeks. Stabilise it first.
- Standards are not agreed. Automation needs clear rules.
- A built-in CAD feature already does it. Training may be cheaper.
- Volume is very low. A task done twice a year rarely justifies software.
The right time to invest is when a process is stable, frequent and painful, and before it forces you to hire.
How to start with low risk
- Book a short workflow assessment.
- Pick one high-value task.
- Deliver a first tool in weeks, not months.
- Measure results and decide on the next step.
