CAD Automation

What Is CAD Automation? A Complete Guide for Engineering Companies

CAD automation uses software to perform design, documentation and data tasks that engineers would otherwise do by hand. This guide covers what it is, what it can do and how to start.

Definition

CAD automation is the use of programs, scripts and rules to create, modify, check or export CAD data automatically. Instead of an engineer clicking through each step, the software performs the task based on inputs and design rules, often in seconds.

CAD automation vs CAD customisation

The two overlap. Customisation changes how the CAD software looks and behaves (new commands, UI, libraries). Automation focuses on removing manual work (generating models, drawings, BOMs, exports). Most projects include both.

What can be automated?

AreaExamples
ModellingGenerate parts and assemblies from parameters or spreadsheets
DrawingsViews, dimensions, balloons, title blocks, sheet sets
DataBOMs, properties, cut lists, reports
CheckingDesign rules, standards, drawing validation
OutputPDF, DWG, DXF, STEP, IFC batch exports
IntegrationERP, PLM, PDM and CAM data exchange

Levels of CAD automation

  1. Task automation: scripts and macros that speed up single tasks.
  2. Workflow automation: add-ins that chain several tasks, such as model → drawing → PDF → ERP.
  3. Design automation: rules-based generation of complete products from requirements, also called knowledge-based engineering (KBE).
  4. Unattended automation: server or cloud processes that run without a user, for example overnight batch jobs or web configurators.

Technologies used

  • AutoLISP, .NET and ObjectARX for AutoCAD.
  • Inventor API and iLogic; Revit API and Dynamo; Fusion API.
  • SOLIDWORKS API; Creo TOOLKIT and J-Link; CATIA CAA and automation; NX Open.
  • Autodesk Platform Services Design Automation for cloud processing.
  • Excel, SQL databases and REST APIs for input and integration.

Examples by industry

  • Machinery: automatic conveyor or machine variants with drawings and BOMs.
  • Sheet metal fabrication: flat patterns and DXF files for laser cutting.
  • MEP and construction: Revit sheet creation, tagging and schedules.
  • Electrical: panel layouts, wire numbering and reports in AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Aerospace and automotive: validation, metadata and supplier data packages.

Benefits

  • Design and documentation time reduced dramatically on routine work.
  • Consistent quality and fewer errors.
  • Faster quotes and deliveries.
  • Engineering knowledge captured in software, not only in people.
CAD automation does not replace engineers. It removes the parts of their job that do not need an engineer.

How to get started

  1. Identify repetitive, rule-based tasks and estimate their time cost.
  2. Choose one quick win and one strategic project.
  3. Work with a partner who knows both engineering and software.
  4. Measure, improve and scale.
