The hidden cost of repetition
Repetitive CAD work is rarely one big task. It is dozens of small ones: five minutes here filling properties, ten minutes there renaming files. Across a team of ten engineers, these minutes easily add up to one or two full-time people doing nothing but routine work.
The most common repetitive tasks
| Task | Custom tool that removes it |
|---|---|
| Filling title blocks and properties | Auto-fill from project data, ERP or a form |
| Inserting standard parts and blocks | Searchable library with correct sizes and part numbers |
| Numbering parts, tags or balloons | Automatic numbering following your rules |
| Creating BOMs and cut lists | BOM generator with Excel / ERP export |
| Exporting PDF, DXF, STEP | One-click batch export with naming rules |
| Checking layers, styles and standards | Automatic standards checker with fix option |
| Creating similar parts from templates | Parametric generator from a few inputs |
| Updating revisions across drawings | Batch revision update tool |
How to find repetition in your team
- Ask engineers which tasks they find boring. They always know.
- Watch a real job from order to release and note each manual step.
- Look for copy-paste between CAD, Excel and email.
- Check rework causes: repeated errors usually point to a manual step.
Prioritise by value
For each task, estimate: minutes per occurrence × occurrences per week × number of engineers. Then consider how error-prone it is. Tasks that are frequent, rule-based and error-prone should be automated first.
Example: filling drawing properties
8 minutes × 25 drawings/week × 6 engineers
= 1,200 minutes/week ≈ 20 hours/week saved
Beyond time savings
- Quality: the tool never forgets a step.
- Morale: engineers spend more time on real engineering.
- Onboarding: new staff follow standards from day one.
- Scalability: handle more orders without hiring in proportion.
If a task follows the same rules every time, a computer should be doing it.
