The Fusion API
Fusion supports scripts (run once) and add-ins (loaded at start-up, adding commands and panels), written in Python or C++. The same object model covers design, CAM and data management.
Design automation
- Create sketches, features and components from parameters.
- Update user parameters to generate variants.
- Custom commands with dialogs for company-specific features.
- Export STEP, STL, DXF and drawings in batches.
# Fusion Python: update parameters and export STEP
import adsk.core, adsk.fusion
app = adsk.core.Application.get()
design = adsk.fusion.Design.cast(app.activeProduct)
params = design.userParameters
for width in [200, 250, 300]:
params.itemByName('Width').expression = f'{width} mm'
exp = design.exportManager
opts = exp.createSTEPExportOptions(f'C:/out/bracket_{width}.step')
exp.execute(opts)
CAM automation
| Task | Automation |
|---|---|
| Setups | Create setups with stock and work coordinate systems |
| Templates | Apply machining templates to parts |
| Toolpath generation | Generate and regenerate operations |
| Tool libraries | Manage company tool libraries |
| Post-processing | Post to NC code for each machine; setup sheets |
Post-processors
Fusion post-processors are written in JavaScript (.cps files) and shared with other Autodesk CAM products. Custom posts adapt output to specific machines, controllers and shop preferences.
Cloud and data
Fusion's cloud data can be accessed through Autodesk Platform Services APIs, allowing web apps to list projects, read designs and create viewables.
Publishing on the Autodesk App Store
Commercial Fusion add-ins can be distributed through the Autodesk App Store, reaching Fusion users worldwide.
Fusion's single API across CAD and CAM makes end-to-end automation unusually straightforward.
