Native vs Cross-Platform App Development: How to Choose

It is one of the first decisions in any mobile project, and one of the most expensive to reverse. Here is a practical way to decide.

The two approaches

Native development means building a separate app for each platform using its official language and tools: Kotlin with Jetpack Compose for Android, Swift with SwiftUI for iOS.

Cross-platform development means writing one codebase that runs on both, using frameworks like Flutter (Dart) or React Native (JavaScript / TypeScript). Kotlin Multiplatform, which shares business logic while keeping native UI, sits in between.

Choose native when...

  • Performance is critical: games, heavy animation, real-time audio / video, AR.
  • You rely heavily on hardware: Bluetooth LE, NFC, background location, custom devices.
  • You need new OS features the day they are released (widgets, Live Activities, Wear OS).
  • You are targeting only one platform, for example Android-only enterprise devices.
  • Your brand wants each app to feel perfectly at home on its platform.

Choose cross-platform when...

  • You need Android and iOS quickly with one budget.
  • You are building an MVP to validate an idea.
  • The app is mainly forms, lists, content, e-commerce or dashboards.
  • You want one team and synchronised releases.
  • You already have React or web developers (React Native) or want highly custom UI (Flutter).

Flutter or React Native?

Both are mature and widely used. Flutter renders its own UI, giving pixel-perfect consistency and smooth performance, and can also target web and desktop. React Native uses native UI components and fits naturally into teams that already use React and TypeScript. We choose based on your team, design and integration needs rather than hype.

The hybrid option

You don't always have to choose all-or-nothing. Many successful apps are cross-platform with native modules for performance-critical parts, or native apps that share business logic through Kotlin Multiplatform.

The right choice depends on your product, users, timeline and budget, not on which technology is trending this year.

Questions to ask before deciding

  1. Which platforms do most of your users use?
  2. Which device features must the app use?
  3. How soon do you need to launch, and with what budget?
  4. Who will maintain the app in two years?
  5. Will you also need web or desktop versions?
