CAD Automation

CAD Automation for MEP Engineering Workflows

MEP design involves huge numbers of elements, calculations and sheets. Automation in Revit MEP and AutoCAD MEP removes the repetitive work so engineers can focus on system design.

Automation by discipline

DisciplineAutomation examples
HVACDuct and pipe sizing, diffuser placement by room airflow, equipment schedules
ElectricalLighting layouts, circuiting, panel schedules, cable tray fill, load reports
PlumbingFixture unit calculations, pipe sizing, riser diagrams
Fire protectionSprinkler placement by coverage rules, hydraulic data export
All disciplinesTagging, sheet creation, view setup, parameter filling, QA checks

Documentation automation

Documentation can take a large share of MEP project hours. Revit API tools can:

  • Create sheets and place views for every level and discipline.
  • Apply view templates, filters and scope boxes consistently.
  • Tag all ducts, pipes, equipment and fixtures with collision-aware placement.
  • Renumber sheets, views and equipment by rules.
  • Export sheets to PDF and DWG with correct naming for transmittals.

Coordination and clash preparation

Automation prepares models for coordination: checking for missing systems, disconnected elements, incorrect insulation and clearance zones before clash detection in Navisworks, reducing noise in clash reports.

From design to fabrication

Converting design models into fabrication-ready parts, spool drawings and cut lists can be partly automated, including numbering, hanger placement and export to fabrication software.

Example: placing tags in Revit (C#)

var ducts = new FilteredElementCollector(doc, view.Id)
    .OfCategory(BuiltInCategory.OST_DuctCurves)
    .WhereElementIsNotElementType();

using (var t = new Transaction(doc, "Tag ducts"))
{
    t.Start();
    foreach (Element d in ducts)
    {
        var mid = ((LocationCurve)d.Location).Curve.Evaluate(0.5, true);
        IndependentTag.Create(doc, view.Id, new Reference(d), false,
            TagMode.TM_ADDBY_CATEGORY, TagOrientation.Horizontal, mid);
    }
    t.Commit();
}
In MEP, automation turns days of tagging and sheet setup into minutes.

AutoCAD MEP workflows

Many firms still use AutoCAD MEP for 2D and schematic work. Automation there covers schematic generation, equipment tagging, schedules and layer standards.
